Satellites, digital radio and internet will now bring free radio back to the listener.
Some stations rely on donations, merchandise and listeners support. E.g. Radio Caroline started from a
radio ship in international waters and returned on the internet, Sky (UK) and the Worldspace Portable

Radio Caroline before the period of LA seen
in a
'Loving Awareness' perspective ( read overview below):
In the 60's economic growth was prospering and for the first time a lot of young people got
better education and more free time to spend than generations before. This released a lot of
energy into new activities where youth was interested in: music, movies, travelling, love and
friendship, relaxation and having fun while meeting each other. New products like the electric
guitar, the amplifier, and the transistor radio (for on the beach!) changed life.
The emergence of Radio Caroline in 1964 is a good example of such a new activity and was
itself essential for the fast spreading of a whole new youth culture. It took several years before
this youth culture became more mature. This is also reflected in the development of popmusic:
1966 and 1967 being wonderful years of ever better pop singles.
By the time Radio Caroline was temporarily forced to close down in march 1968 the trend
to make complete pop-albums instead of singles had only just started and stereo instead of
mono recordings became available: the Sergeant Pepper's album (1967) by the Beatles
being a fine example of both.
By taking some jingles and station identifications of Radio Caroline from the period 1964 to
1968 it can be shown what Radio Caroline stood for and how it evolved in it's first period of
transmissions:"Your all day music station", "Sounds fine it's Caroline", "Home of the British
music explosion","Sound of the Nation - Radio Caroline".
No sign of "Loving Awareness" in that first period of Caroline one would perhaps conclude.
Well, indirectly there is. The musical development of the Beatles is of utmost importance to
understand how and exactly when Radio Caroline became involved in "Loving Awareness".
A lot of people know the release date of the Beatles single "All you need is love" (7/7/1967)
and remember the first worldwide TV satellite broadcast ever on the 17th that month with
the Beatles playing this. Paul McCartney said on this occasion: from the moment we knew
that more than 400 million people would be watching, we decided to bring a message of
attention for more love to the world.
Radio Caroline must have played this song extensively because it was a worldwide number
one hit. Knowing that the Beatles were very aware of the content of the message they put
across the globe we need to know how they came to it.
The story in short: after George Harrison met Ravi Chankar in 1965 ( a famous Indian sitar
player, known from a highly acclaimed album release in that year) it wouldn't take long before
he introduced the sitar string-instrument to the music of the Beatles, for the first time in the
number "Norwegian Wood" on the Rubber Soul album. For a better understanding and
learning of the Indian musical tradition other aspects of Indian culture were helpful and needed
as well.
So especially George Harrison and John Lennon came into contact with Hindu philosophies
(e.g about finding love and truth within yourself and sharing it with others). They not only
took Indian musical elements for their songs but also started to include occasionally what
they learned from these writings in their songtexts.
In the film Help (1965) a book on Hindu philosophy is handed over to each of the Beatles.
The music on the album Help (released in june 1965) shows no influence yet, but on the next
Beatles Album Rubber Soul (released on the 3rd of December 1965) a song is included that
can be considered the first "Loving Awareness" song. It is called "The word":
In the beginning I misunderstood
but now I've got it the word is good
now that I know what I feel must be right
I'm here to show everybody the light
give the word a chance to say
let the word it's just a way
and the
ONLY word is love
So the airing of this track on Radio Caroline can be considered an early forerunner on what
later would turn into The Voice of Loving Awareness. Ofcourse at this time nobody knew it
ever would.
With both Caroline ships silent and chained up in Amsterdam Harbour awaiting release after a
financial dispute with the tender company - time not stood still. A period of great pop festivals
e.g Woodstock,Toronto, Isle of Wight emerged. Not only a pop music industry matured -
also the youth itself. Music was used to express their modern thoughts and this proved to be
powerful enough to arouse a general feeling that things had to be changed -so why not start
doing it?
'Change' was in the air, a wave of protest songs rolled over the world , the Beatles split up
while John Lennon with his own new band already was strongly involved in this new era. This
freed George Harrison to move musically & lyrically more into compassion with inner change.
He delivered with the "All things must pass" album (1970) an astonishing solo album in line
with his famous protest song "While my guitar gently weeps".
I look at you all - see the love there that's sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping
Still my guitar gently weeps
I don't know why nobody told you how to unfold your love
I don't know how someone controlled you
They bought and sold you.
I look at the world and I notice it's turning
While my guitar gently weeps
On the 10th of November 1972 a continuous tape with part of 'People say we're in love' by
Ray Connif could be heard on 259 mtrs AM. December of that year brought the official
comeback of Radio Caroline. Just in time to join in with John &Yoko Ono's "Merry Xmas
War is over" and to start writing another great page of radio history in Europe:
